VRD - Seeing the future

With the development of new high-brightness LEDs, the University of Washington are developing a new breed of VRD - Visual Retinal Display - which draws a high-resolution edge-less display directly onto the retina of the eye.

Ok so the projection apparatus needs to sit somewhere but a pair of ordinary looking glasses are plenty big enough to house all the electronics and hey presto, no more bulky computer screen, or miniscule little portable DVD screens - full field of vision viewing in super high quality!

The display can also be used as an overlay to what you are actually seeing around you, so how about speech notes as you talk, nav directions, building or street layouts as you walk, or even recipes as you cook?

Microvision are currently developing commercial versions of this technology and their website is here:

They're also looking at business projectors that fit inside your mobile...pretty cool people
